| Lord Bhattacharyya donates £1m to Warwick University |

Industrial expert and Labour peer Lord Kumar Bhattacharyya is giving £1m to Warwick University - one of the largest donations ever made to a UK academic institution by a serving staff member. He hopes that the money will form the nucleus of a £30m fund to support research at Warwick Manufacturing Group, the industrial research body he set up 30 years ago. Lord Bhattacharyya said that more wealthy people should support higher education. "Very little philanthropic funding goes into UK universities aside from Oxford and Cambridge. US universities are much better endowed," he said. He started the Warwick Manufacturing Group as a one-man band. It now occupies four buildings, employs 450 staff and generates yearly turnover of around £140m ($215m). The body specialises in creating research collaborations between business and academia and works with companies such as Jaguar Land Rover, BAE Systems and AstraZeneca. It runs teaching and research centres in Hong Kong, India, Singapore, Malaysia and Thailand. Lord Bhattacharyya is a past member of the UK Council for Science and Technology. He has also served as a scientific adviser to the South African government. He is a Trustee of the Institute for Public Policy Research and served on the National Consumer Council from 1990 to 1993. He was appointed CBE in 1997 and knighted in 2003. In January 2002 he was awarded the Padma Bhushan by the President of India. - Agencies Related Articles:
