A UK-based NRI has been allegedly duped by a businessman in Mumbai to the tune of Rs 2.25 crore (approx £283,000).

After three months of running from pillar-to-post, the NRI finally managed to convince the police and lodge a cheating complaint against the businessman.

According to the Cuffe Parade police in Mumbai, which is investigating the case, Suresh Mani, 64, who owns the I-TEK Business Solutions Private Limited in UK, went to India to start a business but was allegedly duped by accused Deepak Shroff, 55.

Mani allegedly took a property on rent at 707, Raheja Centre, Nariman Point by giving the deposit of Rs 2.25 crore for a period of 52 weeks to Shroff.

"According to the contract, after 52 weeks if Shroff failed to pay back the deposit amount, he would allow me to sell off the property for not less than Rs 2.5 crore," Mani said.

"However, when Shroff failed to pay back the deposit amount, I filed for arbitration but I got a shock when I came to know that the said property was already mortgaged to Bank of India, Nariman Point branch," he added.

"We are investigating the matter to collect sufficient evidence to confirm the complaint against Shroff," said Police Inspector, Vilas Bhole. Meanwhile, Shroff got anticipatory bail from the court, police said.

"The police is also trying to find out from how many banks Shroff had taken loan and if there is anybody else who has been cheated by him," said senior police inspector, Dhanraj Vanjari.

When contacted Shroff refused to comment on the issue. Since the amount involved in the cheating case is more than Rs50 lakh, the case has now been transferred to the Economic Offences Wing of the Mumbai crime branch.

"It took me almost three months to lodge a complaint. Finally, I met joint commissioner of police Rakesh Maria to help me in filing the FIR and with his help I managed to lodge my complaint after three months," said Mani.
