NRIs from Chandigarh now have a special cell to redress their grievances and settle disputes.

Inaugurated on the occasion of the Indian Independence Day on Saturday, the NRI cell is located at the deputy commissioner's office in Sector 17.

"The objective of this cell is to help NRIs by protecting their rights, especially in property-related matters, matrimonial and financial disputes," UT home secretary Ram Niwas said.

The major issue of concern regarding matrimonial problems is delay in visa for bride and bridegrooms.

"The administration has ensured possible assistance in facilitating necessary documentation from offices concerned and expediting the process for new NRIs to meet relatives abroad," the home secretary said.

Representing the NRI community, Vikram Bajwa from Canada thanked the administration and officers for setting up the cell.
