Clive Dunstan, 53, underwent a weight reduction surgery at a private hospital at Kular Hospital, Bija, near Ludhiana.

He opted for the sugery in India as there was a long waiting list in UK.

Dunstan lost around 11 kg after the mini-gastric bypass and could walk on the same day the surgery was performed.

"I was overweight, diabetic and hypertensive since last one decade and life was like a burden to me. I was advised laparoscopic gastric surgery by the doctors in London but could not get an early appointment there," said Dunstan.

He added: "I searched for 'mini-gastric bypass surgery' on the Internet and then contacted Dr Kuldeepak Singh Kular of Kular Hospital, Bija through e-mail and got an appointment for surgery. I was operated upon 20 days ago and have lost 11 kg of weight since. Even my sugar levels are normal without any medication.

He said that the standard of medical service in India was now at par with the western countries. "The surgery went on smoothly and I faced no problem whatsoever after surgery."

Dr Kuldeepak Singh Kular, Chief Bariatric Surgeon at the Kular Hospital, said that bariatric and metabolic surgery worked extremely well for obesity and diabetes type-II.

He said that the surgery saved patients from the associated medical problems like breathlessness, heart attack, diabetes etc.
