Parents in the UK are the most protective of their children in the world, according to a new report.

The research found that over one fifth of mothers in the UK want to supervise their children's every move, The Scotsman reported.

It was found that other countries demonstrated a more relaxed attitude to letting their children play unsupervised.

In Argentina, 18% of mothers said they would watch over their children, with the US following close behind with 15 per cent. Only four per cent of mothers in India would supervise their children playing.

The study revealed that not letting children take part in 'free play' could mean that children are unable to form social relationships and may limit their creativity.

"If we can increase play in childhood years, we can help increase emotional development and social skills needed for later on in life," child behaviour expert Kris Murrin told The Scotsman.

He went on to say that children need time to explore and play in order to be able to have formative experiences.

This follows recent research conducted by UKFamily.co.uk which showed that two thirds of mothers with young children would like to give up work in order to care for them.
