Works by 26 emerging and established artists like Subodh Gupta, Jitish Kallat, Nikhil Chopra and Mansoor Ali, most of which have never been shown in the UK before, will be on display at an exhibition in London starting January.

The famed Saatchi Gallery will play host to 'The Empire Strikes Back: Indian Art Today' from 29 January - 7 May in which the artists offer a striking interpretation of new India.

Works containing a strong denunciation of the social and political implications of globalisation, mainly responsible for the exponential urbanisation, the disenfranchisement of rural areas and the rise of fundamentalism will be on display, the organisers said.

"Despite homegrown contemporary art being underrepresented in public museums in India, its commercial and international success have allowed small ventures to grow into thriving art galleries in Mumbai, Delhi and Bangalore, with outposts opening in Europe and the US.

"The rapid flourishing of this art scene on the one hand and the recent economic downturn on the other have prompted critical questions about Indian culture and globalisation in a country torn between a proudly independent mindset and a dependence on global consumption," the organisers said in a statement.

"Against this backdrop, contemporary Indian artists are making a diverse range of work, which responds to the complexities of 21st century India," the statement noted.
