| Newcastle Mela draws thousands |

Thousands of people enjoyed fun in the sun as one of the Norths biggest festivals came to life on 26-27 September. Young and old headed to Exhibition Park to enjoy the sights, smells and sounds of the Newcastle Mela. The huge array of cultural delights on offer ensured no one was disappointed. The Mela - based on Punjabi, Pakistani, Bengali, Hindi and other South Asian cultures - included traditional music and dance alongside a host of stalls. Fantastic food on offer also drew huge crowds. The two-day free festival was the 16th held in the city and is expected to attract well over 30,000 people. A host of community groups staged colourful performances included rapping, Bollywood dances, street and breakdancing, and a fashion show. Bhangra group Alaap and singer Jazzy B also performed.
